What's new at Spofford Lake?

Autumn on Spofford Lake is a beautiful time of year. With the late October snowstorm we had foliage topped with snow as shown in the picture above. Fortunately most of the trees surrounding the lake were spared the damage visited on their southern cousins in MA & CT.

The Fall Newsletter was mailed during the week of October 31st. We've also placed a copy on the website. See the 'Newsletter...' section to the right.

Water quality testing results for 2011 are provided in the section listed at the right. Also included is a chart showing   in water quality metrics from 1988 thru 2011 and comparisons to all other NH lakes. Phosphorus levels, which promote the growth of
algae, continues to be a problem.

On Tuesday Sept. 13 there was a gasoline spill on the north west corner of the lake in the Silverdale Rd area. The Spofford Fire dept. along with several mutual aid towns responded to contain and clean up the spill. As operations started, DES and the EPA were contacted. (case number 989423).  The Spofford Fire Dept. deployed 440 feet of absorbent containment booms. The SFD also  inspected every boat on the lake but were unable to find the source of origin. Per DES, operations were suspended as it was concluded that the gasoline would evaporate. The wind  blowing from the southwest and, it was assumed, that most of the film had reached the shore line. Please be careful. Always check your boat's fuel lines.
